London Philharmonic Orchestra
Resident Orchestra at Southbank Centre
The London Philharmonic Orchestra’s first season under its new Principal Conductor, Vladimir Jurowski, in 2007/08, won over audiences and critics alike. Under Jurowski’s musical direction the Orchestra presents a number of major initiatives for the 2008/09 season, including Revealing Tchaikovsky, a unique festival collaboration with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in association with Southbank Centre, exploring many of the composer’s rarely performed masterpieces.
The Orchestra also celebrates another exciting appointment this season, that of Yannick Nezet-Seguin as Principal Guest Conductor, whose debut with the Orchestra in 2007 demonstrated his extraordinary communicative qualities. Other highlights include orchestral and choral music by Dvorak, a season-long celebration of Mendelssohn’s 200th anniversary, including a reconstruction of what would have been his third Piano Concerto, and the world premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s violin concerto Mambo, Blues and Tarantella.
The Orchestra welcomes return visits from conductors including Neeme Jarvi, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky and Yuri Temirkanov, and audiences can anticipate some great performances by soloists including violinist Christian Tetzlaff, cellist Mischa Maisky, baritone Matthias Goerne and pianists Martin Helmchen and Simon Trpceski.
