Cape Farewell | Southbank Centre.
Cape Farewell pioneers the cultural response to climate change.
In July 2007, Cape Farewell moved into the Riverside Room, just in front of Queen Elizabeth Hall and looking out over the Thames, beginning a three-year residency at Southbank Centre. Cape Farewell works internationally to bring artists, scientists and communicators together to stimulate ideas and the production of art founded in scientific research. Since 2001, artist, founder and Director David Buckland has lead scientists, artists, educators and film crews on five expeditions to the High Arctic, one of the world's key climate tipping points. From these expeditions has sprung an extensive programme of exhibitions and events, film, publications and wide range of educational resources.
In September 2007, Cape Farewell celebrated the start of its residency at Southbank Centre with a Thames launch of its first youth voyage to the Arctic. A multimedia exhibition, presenting the project with a live link to the Arctic, was shown in Royal Festival Hall over September and October 2007. During its residency, Cape Farewell operates as an eco-hub at the centre of Southbank Centre's sustainability agenda, bringing artwork, cultural events and activities in order to raise awareness and encourage an urgent response to the climate change challenge.
Cape Farewell's other major UK partner is the Eden Project and Cape Farewell will be participating in the Eden Sessions programme this summer 2008. Cape Farewell leads its sixth and seventh expeditions to the Arctic in September 2008.
