Rafael Bonachela | Southbank Centre.
Rafael Bonachela moved to London from his native Barcelona and joined Rambert Dance Company in 1992 where he danced for 12 years. He was appointed Rambert's Associate Choreographer from April 2003 until November 2005. Rafael won the first ever Place Prize Award for Choreography in 2004 and both the Guglielmo Ebreo Prize and the Critics’ Prize at the Biennale Danza e Italia international competition in 2006. He also launched Bonachela Dance Company in 2006. Recent and future commissions include work for Sydney Dance Company, George Piper Dances, Candoco and Danza Contemporanea de Cuba.
In 2002, he was commissioned to choreograph Kylie Minogue's routine at the Brit Awards. His unique approach to choreography, combining contemporary dance within a more mainstream context, was so highly acclaimed that he went onto work extensively with Kylie Minogue in her world tours and other artists including Tina Turner, The Kills and Primal Scream.
Rafael Bonachela is a Southbank Centre Artist in Residence supported by Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
