Steve McQueen: Queen and Country

Saturday 26 April 2008 - Sunday 1 June 2008

With Queen and Country, official war artist Steve McQueen commemorates British service personnel who have been killed during the current conflict in Iraq. The work consists of an installation of facsimile postage stamp sheets featuring photographic portraits of individual men and women who have lost their lives in the conflict so far.  Each stamp also bears the standard profile of Her Majesty the Queen, the sovereign in whose name they went to fight. The work is a collaboration with their families and its ultimate goal is to persuade Royal Mail to issue real stamps in honour of the dead.

Queen and Country was first shown at the Manchester International Festival in 2007. It was acquired in November 2007 by The Art Fund, the UK’s leading independent art charity, for the Imperial War Museum. The work was produced with the support of Thomas Dane Gallery, London.
