Antonin Dvorak Cello Concerto
INTERVAL
Johannes Brahms Symphony No.1

Christoph Eschenbachconductor
Daniel Mueller-Schottcello

'Why on earth didn't I know that one could write a cello concerto like this? If I had only known, I would have written one long ago.' So wrote Brahms of his colleague Dvorak's concerto for the cello as he perused a score brimming with melodic invention, effortless beauty and warmth of character. As for Brahms, the insistent, compelling discipline of his First Symphony affected Dvorak and many others deeply, its opening bars launching mid-sentence, pushing outwards and inwards, grim, tense and utterly compelling. Make no mistake, Brahms the symphonist had arrived.
