Franz Schubert Symphony No.9 in C (Great)

As Felix Mendelssohn attempted to conduct the 'Great' C major Symphony by Schubert in London, the enormity of the
latter composer's imagination became clear: musicians were dumbfounded, seemingly unable to transform Schubert's notation
into sound. But Mendelssohn, himself an innovator (not least in his delightfully
liberated First Piano Concerto), believed
Schubert's symphony 'bright, fascinating and original'. The exuberant, tireless energy of its final movement spirals
heavenward towards its creator, who never lived to hear it played.
