Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Manfred Symphony

The mysterious Manfred haunts the canons of literature and music. Lord Byron spawned the character - a nobleman haunted by
an enigmatic guilt surrounding the death of his beloved, hoping for forgetfulness rather than redemption. The embodiment of
Romanticism, Manfred’s tortured spirit and idealism inspired Schumann and Tchaikovsky, both of whom grappled with guilt,
depression and suicide, and expressed Manfred’s yearning and questioning in their dazzling, striking scores.
Royal Festival Hall at 6pm: A performance of Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet No.3. Admission free.
