Two offbeat scores from his thirties see Richard Strauss turning not to the grand concepts of human heroism and spiritual rebirth, but rather painting more immediate and local musical pictures. In a thinly disguised Munich, the knavish fool Till Eulenspiegel causes puckish havoc, meeting with the sternest punishment but seeming still to survive it. Strauss' pantomime picture of provincial Germany overflows with mischief, whilst Symphonia domestica, performed on 24 January, throws the spotlight on someone else altogether...

Royal Festival Hall at 6.15pm: Marin Alsop discusses the evening's programme. Admission free.
