In 1893 the young Rachmaninov was approached by Tchaikovsky, who proposed that the opera Iolanta be heard in a double-bill with the younger composer's Aleko. Such an endorsement from his musical 'guiding star' filled Rachmaninov with the courage and energy that pervaded his career, not least in his final work, the white-knuckle Symphonic Dances. In the wake of our two-week focus on the music of Tchaikovsky there's music too from another of his compositional heirs, Stravinsky, who both verbally and musically underlined the scope and scale of Tchaikovsky's influence.
