Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Symphony No.6 (Pathetique)

Nine days before Tchaikovsky's death came the first performance of his last symphony, the Pathetique. A distraught Tchaikovsky, probably driven to suicide as his long-hidden homosexuality began to creep in to the public arena, had in effect written his own funeral music. An orthodox funeral chant haunts the first movement, and as the symphony continues happiness is longed for but never achieved. The triumphant march of the third movement is followed by a devastating descent into the depths - the symphony overwhelmed by its composer's own prophetic emotional exhaustion.
