The concerto for violin by Jean Sibelius is filled with more than a rhapsodic yearning and effortless beauty; it is recognisably the work of a man utterly besotted with the instrument. To his disappointment Sibelius the violinist never achieved the success of Sibelius the composer. But this haunting, languorous work - combining the purity of a snow-driven Nordic panorama with its composer’s still human sense of frailty and hope - is as great a gift to the violin world as any musician could hope to make.
