1857, and Brahms began to follow his mentor Robert Schumann's advice, pointing his 'magic wand to where the power amassed in the orchestra and chorus would lend him its might'. Schumann hoped an extended orchestral-choral work from his acolyte would offer 'wonderful glimpses of the spirit world'. What Brahms delivered was a very human Requiem, and, indeed, a very German one: a piece that captures the cultural rather than dogmatic belief of Brahms' Germany, carrying the gift of spiritual comfort rather than the threat of impending judgement; an exquisite and profoundly moving work.

Royal Festival Hall at 6.15pm: Yannick Nezet-Seguin talks with pianist Roberto Prosseda and composer Marcello Bufalini about Mendelssohn's reconstructed Piano
Concerto. Admission free.
