Mahler Symphony No.1 (vers. standard in 4 movements)

Vladimir Jurowskiconductor
Martin Helmchenpiano

Even on his first symphonic steps, the Mahler of the Sixth and Ninth Symphonies is discernible. Already the composer was pushing the boundaries of instrumentation and harmony, preparing moments of spacious, delicate stillness with passages of unstoppable momentum, and crying out from within his orchestra with commands, pleas and prophecies that pinned audiences to their seats. Mahler's utterly individual symphonic language was born, and so, here, begins Vladimir Jurowski's exploration of it, conducting his first Mahler symphony with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
