From the Canyons to the Stars: The Music of Olivier Messiaen
Tuesday 14 October 2008, 7.30pm
Gerard Grisey Les espaces acoustiques
George Benjaminconductor
Paul Silverthorneviola
Described by the composer as 'a great laboratory', Les espaces acoustiques represents the summit of the career of Gerard Grisey (1946-1998), a pupil of Messiaen and leading light of his generation. The cycle, which unfolds to become an entire concert, begins with a ghostly solitary viola player whose material is filtered through expanding instrumental ensembles until there are 84 musicians on stage for the closing pieces. This is the UK premiere performance of the work.
