Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony was conceived by the composer as 'a symphony of the greatness of the human spirit, a song of praise of free and happy mankind'. Chopin's Second Piano Concerto is similarly hopeful in its expressive content. It was composed when Chopin was only 19, already an internationally successful pianist, and full of (unrequited) love: circumstances that conspired to produce a romantic and moving work.
