Encounters: The Early Music Weekend

Looking for the most imaginative, eclectic and far ranging musical encounter of the season? This may just be it. The Encounters weekend has everything you could ask for as it dives headlong into a fascinating selection of encounters between European classical musicians and other cultures, styles and contemporaries.

Events include Musica Secreta and Celestial Sirens bringing their acclaimed production Fallen: A Fantasy in Music, Drama & Film; Baroque superstar Catherine Bott on the melting pot of Arabic, Christian and Jewish medieval music in Spain; French and Chinese musicians presenting an intriguing mix of Western and Eastern music at the Qing dynasty court of Emperor Kangxi; and counter-tenor and castrato-voice expert Nicholas Clapton on Handel’s most famous castrato, the almost mythic Farinelli.

Want to know why Bach walked 200 miles to listen to Buxtehude or what happened to European music when Schutz met Gabrieli? This fascinating weekend devised by Tess Knighton gives you all this and more. A perfect balance of insightful history and brilliant entertainment, and the ideal way to start the autumn season.
