Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment:
         Revolution 2007/08

Revolution. Rebellion. It is probably fair to say that these words are not often associated with classical music. Yet, when the OAE was founded 21 years ago it was just that - a musical revolution and a rebellion against the accepted ways of doing things. That a passionate group of players could form a new orchestra without a figurehead conductor at the top was unthinkable, yet it happened and today the OAE is widely hailed as one of the world’s finest orchestras.

That pioneering and fresh spirit is still evident today. Every concert is a unique event, and their period instruments and performance styles bring a fresh perspective to everything that they play. This season promises to be no exception - featuring a dynamic new version of Dido and Aeneas, a rarity from Schumann and a finished unfinished symphony, together with a whole raft of thought-provoking, imaginative and entertaining concerts.

The OAE’s maverick approach extends beyond their regular evening concerts however. The Night Shift series of informal late night events continues, as does the Insight Club, giving visitors new ways to look at what the OAE does. The OAE education programme continues to introduce the joy of music to thousands of young people and the Attitude scheme makes OAE concerts accessible and affordable for London’s students.
