Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No.1
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No.2
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No.3 (Eroica)
Ever the radical, Beethoven's First Symphony begins with an unprepared dissonance. The shock factor of this gesture in 1799 must have been enormous. The slow introduction to the Second Symphony was the longest written up to that point, while the Eroica takes the symphony to whole new level of complexity, integration and orchestral mastery.
