As a centrepiece of the Chorus festival, Southbank Centre has invited artist Martin Creed to create a version of his Work No. 409 specially for the JCB glass lift in Royal Festival Hall, in which visitors’ journeys are accompanied by the recorded voices of Voicelab singers, rising as the lift rises and descending as it falls.
Winner of the Turner Prize in 2001, Martin Creed is one of the most eminent artists of his generation. Born in 1968 in Wakefield, England, from the age of three he lived in Glasgow, Scotland. Between 1986 and 1990 he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. He currently lives and works in London and Alicudi.
