Yan Lianke's novel Serve The People was banned in China, and his work exemplifies the issues of Freedom of Expression so pressing in China today. The novel found a huge audience on the internet for it's mixture of satire and romance and for its exposure of the corruption at the heart of the Cultural Revolution. Yan Lianke discusses his work in the light of these complex issues.
