Beethoven wrote on the score of Missa Solemnis: 'From the heart - may it go to the heart.' If any work comes from
the heart, this is it. Others have described the work's sublime awe-inspiring grandeur and intoxicating joy.
This is the world premiere of Julian Knight's A Hundred Spirits Whisper, written for the Highgate Choral Society. It
is inspired by texts representing both personal experience and a wider human theme: that of loss, and the memory and remembrance
of those who have passed away.
Ronald Corp wrote Missa San Marco for performance by HCS on its 125th anniversary
tour in St Mark's Basilica in Venice where it received a standing ovation and demand for an encore. The version with orchestra
receives its first performance at this concert.
Founded in 1878, Highgate Choral Society is one of London's
leading choirs. In recent years, it has enjoyed widespread critical acclaim and built an enviable reputation for the high
standard of its concerts and its championing of both rarely-performed works and new commissions.
Queen Elizabeth
Hall at 6.15pm: Pre-concert talk with Ronald Corp and Julian Knight. Admission free to ticket-holders.
