Vaughan Williams' lark soars skywards - spiralling, floating and climbing towards the firmament with a sense of aspiration and discovery, as if Holst's majestic and boisterous Planets are its just reward. 'It is the blend of the visionary with the realist that gives his music its distinctive character', said the former composer of Holst, and he has a point, for never have such elevated concepts - planets as bringers of war, jollity, magic and mysticism - seemed so human and readily engaging as in Holst's orchestral vision of them.
