The Bach Choir gave the first London performance of Sancta Civitas in 1926, with the composer conducting, and Vaughan Williams regarded this as the favourite of all his choral works. Howells' Sir Patrick Spens is a newly-rediscovered work, recorded by The Bach Choir for Naxos and released in 2007 to critical acclaim. Vaughan Williams was a singing member, and musical director, of The Bach Choir and there will be an exhibition of original scores and other material in the Royal Festival Hall on the day of the concert.
