The International Piano Series is one of the world’s most significant platforms for solo piano recitals, and the coming season is particularly special, as we celebrate its twentieth anniversary in real style.
Chopin at 200: Celebrating a Musical Imagination dominates the events, celebrating the bicentenary of Frédéric Chopin in 2010 with a series of concerts, a Chopin Forum, and six pre-concert talks focusing on Chopin’s musical innovations and his creative use of past traditions. Chopin’s two disputed birthdates are marked by Royal Festival Hall recitals by Krystian Zimerman and Maurizio Pollini.
Other highlights for 2009/10 include Imogen Cooper’s acclaimed Schubert series, and Leif Ove Andsnes performing Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition with stage design and visual accompaniment by the vibrant young South African artist Robin Rhode. There are series debuts for Cédric Tiberghien, Yevgeny Sudbin and Hüseyin Sermet, and the return of many audience favourites including Yundi Li, Paul Lewis, Pascal Rogé and Simon Trpčeski. Clearly a vintage season for the International Piano Series.
