Steve Reich: Mallet Quartet for 2 marimbas & 2 vibraphones
Steve Reich: Quartet for 2 vibraphones & 2 pianos (World premiere)
Colin Currie returns to Southbank Centre with four captivating Steve Reich scores including a world premiere.
This follows the 'musically overwhelming' (The Guardian) performance of Reich's music in Royal Festival Hall last year.
'One of the greatest musicians in the world today' (Steve Reich, reported in The Herald).
Steve Reich and Colin Currie open with one of Reich's most popular pieces, the mesmerising Clapping Music, which started life simply as 'a piece of music that needed no instruments beyond the human body' (Reich).
In the rest of the concert, the Colin Currie Group highlight Reich's interest in tuned percussion instruments, such as marimbas and vibraphones, which have been a feature of his compositions since studying Javanese gamelan and African music in the early 1970s.
Queen Elizabeth Hall at 6.15pm. Pre-concert talk.
