Art and ideas from Africa that are changing the world
Africa Utopia celebrates the arts and culture of one of the world's most dynamic and fast-changing continents. The festival looks at how Africa can lead the way in thinking about culture, community, business and technology. Take a look at some of the highlights from last year’s Africa Utopia by watching the trailer above.
2015’s festival explored topics such as fashion, gender, power, politics, sustainability and activism, featuring some of Africa’s greatest artists across music, dance, literature and the arts. Highlights included legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen with special guests including Damon Albarn; Senegalese supergroup Orchestra Baobab; powerfully soulful West African singer Kassé Mady Diabaté; and the groundbreaking launch of Europe’s first Black and Minority Ethnic classical symphony orchestra, Chineke!
Audiences also enjoyed an original play called Star Boy Productions charting migrants’ stories of survival; emerging African musicians and artists including Blick Bassy, Afriquoi and African Head Charge; and a lively talks and debates programme with a keynote speech by Africa Utopia champion and collaborator Baaba Maal.
