Described as ‘one of the greatest musicians in the world today’ by composer Steve Reich, Colin Currie is an Artist in Residence at Southbank Centre and a world-renowned percussionist.
Metal Wood Skin: The Colin Currie Percussion Festival is both an exploration of Colin’s formidable talent and also the amazing range of cutting-edge music being written specifically for him.
This festival features many of these new commissions, including the world premiere of Steve Reich’s Quartet for 2 Vibraphones & 2 Pianos and the UK premiere of Andriessen’s Percussion Concerto, Tapdance, alongside new works by James MacMillan and Anna Clyne.
Pushing percussion to the limits
You can hear Colin ‘play his body’ as part of Julia Wolfe’s riSE and fLY, which Colin performs with the Youth Orchestra of Bahia.
Along with this, there are gongs, drums, vibraphones, instruments from Asia and beyond, plus new ways of playing traditional instruments.
We need your music-making...
Colin warmly invites youth percussion groups to come and play on Southbank Centre’s foyer stages as part of the festival. There will be opportunities across the weekend of Saturday 4 & Sunday 5 October, but performances are possible throughout the festival.
If you are interested in taking part, please email firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday 11 August 2014 with a short description of your group, and any sound files or weblinks that you’re able to share.
