In 2014, to celebrate the return of the Royal Festival Hall organ after a six-year restoration, Southbank Centre presented Pull Out All The Stops – an organ festival on an unprecedented scale. We commissioned new compositions from British greats Sir John Tavener and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies; artists Martin Creed and Lynette Wallworth both incorporated the instrument into new pieces; and audiences were able to hear major organ works not performed at Royal Festival Hall for many years. In the year leading up to the Pull Out All The Stops festival there were also numerous Learning & Participation projects involving school children, emerging poets, young musicians and composers, local families and children which culminated in performances, installations and exhibitions across Southbank Centre throughout the festival.
Southbank Centre is committed to widening the repertoire performed with the organ, including regular free recitals, more opportunities for new and old audiences to enjoy the instrument, and the return of the International Organ Series, featuring world class organists on the Royal Festival hall organ.
