Sergey Prokofiev: Symphony No.1 in D (Classical)
Sergey Prokofiev: Violin Concerto No.2 in G minor, Op.63
Sergey Rachmaninov: Symphony No.2
The St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra's Yuri Temirkanov conducts an all-Russian programme.
Prokofiev and Rachmaninov were like chalk and cheese. Both were brilliant composer-pianists, but whereas Prokofiev was an iconoclast who delighted in railing at tradition, Rachmaninov inherited Tchaikovsky's mantle without demur.
They shared a genius for indelible melody, however, Prokofiev's being typically cool and sleek while Rachmaninov preferred super-heated luxuriance.Performers
