Hayward Gallery Art Library archives printed material on artists, exhibitions and critical theory, including 22,000 books and exhibition catalogues.

Hayward Gallery Library was established in 1987. It’s the modern incarnation of the Art Council’s Visual Arts Library, which was established in the 1940s.

The collection consists of printed, visual and archive material on artists, exhibitions, architecture, photography and critical theory, with an emphasis on modern and contemporary art (British and international).

Hayward Gallery Library and Archive collections

The collections contain:

  • 22,000 books and exhibition catalogues
  • 46 periodical and journal titles
  • Core archive collection of Hayward exhibition publications
  • Arts Council of Great Britain catalogues and image collection 1942–1993
  • Hayward Touring Exhibitions and the Hayward Gallery art exhibition catalogues 
  • Audio-visual collection
