Chineke! An introduction to the orchestra

Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE introduces Chineke! the orchestra she founded to encourage Black and Minority Ethnic classical musicians.

Introduction to the Chineke! Foundation

Since their first concert in Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2015, Chineke! Orchestra have continued to champion change and celebrate diversity in classical music with concerts and performances across the UK and Europe. Now, one of Southbank Centre's Associate Orchestras, Chineke! continues to go from strength-to-strength, including, as Nwanoku explains, the creation of a junior orchestra for young musicians.

I pulled together sixty-two musicians for our inaugural concert, and it turned out that across those musicians thirty-one different nationalities were represented, which is incredible.

As a charity, we rely on ticket sales for a huge chunk of our income. But now they’ve stopped. And it's a huge worry to us, and the people we work with. In difficult times, we all need the escape of art and culture; it can inspire and unite us. So please – if you can afford to – consider a donation to the Southbank Centre today, to help us be there for you in the future.
