Southbank Centre during winter is truly magical, with thousands of twinkling lights, festive installations and a buzzy but relaxed mood as friends and family get together to celebrate the season. Along with the great atmosphere, we’ve plenty of fun, family-oriented events to enjoy these Christmas school holidays. Read on to find out a few of the highlights.
Experience a blizzard – without freezing your toes off
There’s a reason that Slava’s Snowshow is back with us for another year. If you haven’t experienced this delightful family show then make it a priority this Christmas. It’s funny, it’s touching and it ends with a blizzard that will take your breath away. We recommend this show for ages 8+.
Take a magical nighttime journey
Chirping blackbirds herald nightfall in this whimsical 40-minute show for children aged three to six, from 19 - 31 December. In Night Light, everyday objects are imbued with enchantment as actor and audience explore the existence of light in the dark, and play with the concept that the night is a magical space to be in.
Don’t miss this Edinburgh hit, created by the Danish company Teater Refleksion and Scottish performer Andy Manley (above).
What’s to eeeeeeeeat?
Pleasing the kids at mealtime doesn’t mean the adults can’t eat well too. Head to Giraffe or Wagamama to discover special children’s menus, while you enjoy a delicious grownup lunch or dinner, with plenty of healthy options in both restaurants (or a glass of wine, if it’s been that sort of a day).
And did you know you can bring your own packed lunch and soft drinks to the foyers of Royal Festival Hall? Create your own table picnic and soak up the convivial atmosphere in our beautiful listed building.
Kids’ festival meets epic night out
Rave-A-Roo Wintertime creates a chill club vibe for everyone from babies to grandparents and beyond. You relive your raving days with old skool tracks while the kids bop away to their favourite chart toppers.
And everyone gets involved with a series of frankly ridiculous antics (think drum’n’bass musical statues and a massive jungle dance-off) devised by our super fun hosts. Also, it’s free. Come along and join the hoopla!
Be inspired by the energy and talent of young musicians
Tomorrow’s Warriors has been nurturing the country’s best young jazz talent since since way back in the 1990s and they mark their 25th anniversary with a showcase and events, including a jam with current and former students and a performance of Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite.
These all take place on Friday 10 December, and if you love what you see then come back for another free performance on Thursday 21 December where the Tomorrow’s Warriors House Band perform with the wonderful Floetic Lara (pictured).
Take a wander through our Winter Market
There's something for everyone among the stalls of our Winter Market on the side of the Thames. As well as inspired gift ideas and bespoke jewellery and crafts, there are treats for the sweetest of tooths, with toffees, cakes, and even speciality licquorice available from our alpine-esque wooden huts.
This blog post highlights just a few events that will keep children entertained during the Christmas school holidays, but you can find a full list by searching the ‘family’ events in our What’s On section.
