Introducing the Baroque bassoon

Peter Whelan, principal bassoonist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, introduces the Baroque bassoon.

Introducing the Baroque Bassoon

Whelan talks us through the instrument, that once led to Bach appearing in court for street-fighting. The OAE bassoonists describes how the 18th Century saw the Baroque bassoon develop something of a split personality; being used to deliver bass tones for music of the country, whilst also moving indoors as part of courtyard and palace recitals.

It's a really interesting journey to find the colours inside these instruments and just to see how the wood speaks and what it can say
