The city of Leipzig, located in the eastern German state of Saxony, boasts a strong classical music tradition. Central to this is the famous Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, founded in 1743, and long recognised as one of the world’s leading orchestras.
In this short video the Gewandhausorchester’s long-serving double-bassists Eberhard Spree takes us on a musical tour of Leipzig. He guides us through the city’s landmarks and delves into its connections with famous figures of classical music including Johann Sebastian Bach, Gustav Mahler, Felix Mendelssohn and Richard Wagner.
Andris Nelsons and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig appear at Southbank Centre for two very special concerts on 8 & 9 October.
