Lee Bul became interested in theatre while studying sculpture at Hongik University in Seoul, in the late 1980s. She carried out her first performance involving one of her soft wearable sculptures, which sprout additional limbs and fragile internal organs, in 1988.

At the start of her 12 day performance Sorry for suffering – You think I’m a puppy on a picnic? (1990) Lee Bul boarded a plane from Seoul to Tokyo wearing one of her monstrous sculptures. When she arrived at her destination, she walked the city’s streets – including the downtown business district – clothed in the costume, interacting with the people that she encountered. Much of this performance was improvised. As Lee Bul explains, ‘part of my early attraction to performance was that it was an indeterminate form; the results were never known ahead of time.’
