YONAKA at Robert Smith's Meltdown

Described as ‘one of alternative rock’s most exciting new names’, YONAKA have already been earmarked as a band to watch. Purveyors of ferocious live shows the Brighton-based four-piece offer up a blend of head-banging rock, slick hip-hop and the lo-fi of grime.

Shunning genre-boundaries is something Robert Smith has always been known for, so it’s fitting perhaps to see YONAKA feature on The Cure frontman’s Meltdown line-up. On Sunday 17 June, YONAKA supported The Libertines at Royal Festival hall and their lead singer Theresa Jarvis spoke to us about the loud, aggressive, empowering nature of the sound.

YONAKA | Robert Smith's Meltdown

I’m releasing these things that have either hurt me, or I feel passionate about. In that sense I want to help everyone who hears it. I want them, if they can relate to the song, to sing it along with me.
Theresa Jarvis, YONAKA lead singer, on their music

Meltdown festival is just one aspect of our live contemporary music programme here at Southbank Centre. We have gigs, performances and late night DJ sets throughout the year.
