History is Now: 7 Artists Take On Britain

History is Now: 7 Artists Take On Britain, 10 February – 26 April 2015, Hayward Gallery.  In the run-up to the 2015 General Election held in May 2015, History Is Now: 7 Artists Take On Britain offered a radical new way of thinking about Britain over the past 70 years, since the end of the Second World War.

Filtering collective history through their individual perspectives, seven British artists of different generations and backgrounds – John Akomfrah, Simon Fujiwara, Roger Hiorns, Hannah Starkey, Richard Wentworth and Jane and Louise Wilson – each provided their unique ‘take’ on recent British history.

Covering topics including the Cold War, post-Thatcherite society, feminism, protest movements, ‘mad cow disease’ and celebrity culture through a diverse set of artworks and objects ranging from a Bloodhound Surface-to-Air missile to a half-tonne piece of coal, their varied and highly original curatorial ‘takes’ on Britain provided fresh perspectives and illuminated key moments in the nation’s journey from the post-war period to the present day.

The exhibition was accompanied by a large-format publication featuring full-colour illustrations, alongside illuminating essays, personal reflections and poetry by renowned writers Sheila Dillon, Adrian Forty, Daniel Fujiwara, Charlotte Higgins, Jackie Kay, David Alan Mellor and exhibition curator Cliff Lauson.
