Walking In My Mind

Walking In My Mind, 23 June – 6 September 2009, Hayward Gallery. In Walking in My Mind, ten international artists – Charles Avery, Thomas Hirschhorn, Yayoi Kusama, Bo Christian Larsson, Mark Manders, Yoshitomo Nara, Jason Rhoades, Pipilotti Rist, Chiharu Shiota and Keith Tyson – transformed the Hayward Gallery’s indoor galleries and outdoor sculpture terraces into a series of gigantic sculptural environments, each of which represented an individual mindscape.

Interior worlds of emotions, thoughts, memories and dreams collided with exterior reality, blurring the boundaries between inner and outer space. Using diverse media including drawing, painting, video and sculpture, the ten artists created installations that ranged from the ordered to the chaotic, and from the meditative to the overwhelming.

Walking in My Mind was accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue featuring essays by Mami Kataoka, Hayward Gallery Chief Curator Stephanie Rosenthal and psychologist Susan Blackmore, and a short story by critic Brian Dillon.
