Yuja Wang, piano

Part of International Piano Series

There is only one Yuja Wang. The young Chinese pianist rose to prominence while still in her teens, championed by such pre-eminent conductors as Claudio Abbado and Gustavo Dudamel.

She begins her recital in a mood of introspection, with two of the innocently titled Three Piano Pieces from the last year of Schubert's life. She then turns to Brahms: he loved variation form, and the way he could take the simplest, shortest of ideas and grow from it a musical edifice is brilliantly demonstrated in his 'Handel' Variations, written as a birthday present for Clara Schumann.

Chopin's 24 Preludes have long been a classic of the keyboard, each one a vivid personality in its own right. When heard as a complete cycle, as here, they attain even greater cumulative impact.
