Apocalyptica 'Plays Metallica By Four Cellos'

Part of Nordic Matters

Hear heavy metal played on cellos by Finnish quartet Apocalyptica. Since they first got together to play Metallica covers at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy in 1993, these classically trained cellists have sold over four million albums.

These include their epic 1996 debut Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, which changed the landscape of heavy music for years to come.

Their line-up now includes a drummer, and they have moved on to create original music while developing a distinctive style of neoclassical metal.

The group have collaborated with musicians from bands such as Slipknot, Rammstein and Bush, covered artists including Pantera, Faith No More and David Bowie, performed Wagner anniversary concerts alongside a full orchestra and played Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony for a Greenpeace campaign.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Apocalyptica are re-releasing a remastered version in July 2016, with three bonus instrumental recordings of 'Battery', 'Nothing Else Matters' and 'Seek & Destroy'.

At this concert they return to their roots, performing the Metallica covers that launched their career. Watch them play classic tracks such as ‘Master of Puppets’ and ‘Creeping Death’ on classical instruments.
