Friday Tonic: Suunta

Part of Friday Tonic

Get a taste of Finnish contemporary folk music with a rare UK performance from Suunta, a captivating trio known for their explorations of folk and world music.

Timo Väänänen (kantele), Anna-Kaisa Liedes (vocals) and Kristiina Ilmonen (flutes, percussion and vocals) combine experimental, improvised and composed music using ancient and modern traditional instruments, alongside vocal improvisation, to create the fresh sound of the Suunta ensemble.

Suunta create authentic new music influenced by the oral traditions, textures and rhythms of runosong – a traditional form of sung poetry.

All three musicians are at the forefront of folk music both in Finland and internationally, working across traditional folk music to avant-garde expression.

From the hypnotic sound of the kantele, to dancing flutes and haunting melodies, to thundering percussion and powerful vocal improvisation, the three Finnish musicians have an infectious enthusiasm to leave you spellbound.
