Southbank Centre Community Gamelan Gamelan Wednesday Beginner Course Spring 2017

Part of Gamelan Winter Chimes

Try your hand at this beginners' course in playing the gamelan - a Javanese percussion orchestra.

Learn to play the beautiful Javanese gamelan percussion orchestra from Indonesia – presented as a gesture of friendship from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to the people of Great Britain in 1987. Be mesmerised by the sonorous gong chimes, metallophones and drums of the gamelan orchestra and be a part of the ever-expanding UK Gamelan community.

Tutored by Malcolm Milner, this class is designed for complete novices as well as those with some prior experience of playing gamelan. It gives participants an introduction to the loud style instruments and vocal techniques of the gamelan, the compositional forms and musical concepts used in Indonesia and builds strong foundations for ensemble music-making.

Playing the gamelan is both a rewarding musical and social activity. Classes can inspire self-confidence, improve coordination and listening skills, and encourage team-building.

New players are welcome every term. No previous musical experience is necessary, just a willingness to sit on the floor, take off your shoes and have fun. Chairs can be provided for those less comfortable on the floor.

Not available on Wednesdays? We also offer beginner courses on Mondays. Both the Monday and Wednesday Beginner Gamelan Courses provide a solid foundation to the more advanced Thursday-evening Gamelan courses.
