What You Need to Know: Sibelius and Finnish Independence

Part of Classical Season 2017/18

Sibelius remains a national hero in Finland and is often credited with facilitating his homeland’s journey to independence in 1917.

But with the benefit of a century of hindsight, has Sibelius’ role in Finland’s freedom been fairly recounted? What was his music really saying to turn-of-the-century Finns? And what other cultural and social forces induced the country’s emancipation?

Journalist Andrew Mellor guides us through this study day exploring these questions and more with experts Daniel Grimley and Eveliina Pulkki, exclusive video content from Esa-Pekka Salonen and violinist Pekka Kuusisto, and live chamber performances from the Philharmonia MMSF Instrumental Fellowship programme.

Join us to find out what you need to know to get the most out of the Philharmonia and Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen’s celebration of Finland’s centenary on 7 December.
