Dreamers and Adventurers

Part of Classical Season 2020/21

Settle in for two masterpieces of musical storytelling with the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Cellist Alisa Weilerstein, acclaimed worldwide for her mesmerising performances, takes the title role in Strauss' Don Quixote.

Cervantes' daydreaming knight and his long-suffering sidekick Sancho Panza (represented by a quirky combination of viola, tenor tuba and bass clarinet) encounter vividly drawn windmills, dragons and an army of sheep.

But most striking of all is Strauss's sympathetic portrayal of Don Quixote's wandering, idealistic mind.

Berlioz tells of a very different hero in his Symphonie fantastique – a barely disguised version of himself.

An infatuated young artist sees his beloved everywhere he turns. His opium-fuelled reveries soon turn into terrible nightmares.

A huge orchestra conjures up whirling dancers at a ball, a fearsome witches' sabbath, and Berlioz's chilling vision of his own execution.
