Trial by Jury

Part of Classical Season 2018/19

Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury was the Mamma Mia! of the 1870s, running for hundreds of performances and touring as far as the United States and Australia.

The OAE teams up with conductor John Wilson for its first full-length performance of a Gilbert and Sullivan opera, as well as hits from G&S favourites, including The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore. Wilson is fresh from his success conducting Porgy and Bess at the English National Opera and is well-known for his groundbreaking performances of MGM musicals at the BBC Proms.

Trial by Jury is part courtroom comedy, part love story. Edwin has broken off his engagement to Angelina – so she decides to sue him for breach of contract. But it all gets complicated when the jury shows that it's far from impartial.

Hear the work of Gilbert and Sullivan as you’ve never quite heard it before, performed on instruments from the time the music was written.
