A Journey with the Giants of Jazz

Part of New Music Biennial

Peer into 1917, a seminal year for jazz, with pianist, composer and bandleader Peter Edwards. 1917 saw the first ever commercial jazz recording and the births of some of the genre’s most influential artists.

Those artists include composer ‘Tadd’ Dameron, singer Ella Fitzgerald, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Thelonious Monk, drummer Buddy Rich and percussionist Mongo Santamaria.

Peter Edwards’ piece A Journey with the Giants of Jazz takes inspiration from motifs found in six of those artists’ classic works. Commissioned by Turner Sims Southampton and performed by the Nu Civilisation Orchestra, the piece deconstructs totemic jazz themes to offer audiences a reimagined engagement with the form.

Presented in partnership with Tomorrow’s Warriors and Southampton Music Hub, A Journey with the Giants of Jazz is part of The Jazz Ticket nationwide schools programme.

Generously supported by PRS Foundation’s New Music Biennial.
