Jazz Voice - Festival Opening Gala

Part of EFG London Jazz Festival

EFG London Jazz Festival’s signature opening-night gala showcases a stellar cast of voices with a celebration of song, hosted by Jumoké Fashola.

This year, vocalists are supported by Guy Barker’s mighty 42-piece orchestra.

Mariza joins the bill, bringing her iconic fado sound to the show, ahead of her full Festival show featuring new and highly acclaimed album Mariza.

Orange Is the New Black’s ‘Big Boo’ Lea Delaria takes to the stage as she 'swings hard, and scats and bends notes in a style that suggests a no-frills Betty Carter on steroids.' (The New York Times).

Also bringing her powerful voice to the opening gala is Lisa Stansfield, 'a tour de force' (The Guardian) with a four-decade career and hits such as ‘All Around the World’ and ‘The Real Thing’.

Stansfield is joined by Canadian jazz vocalist Laila Biali, who has worked with the likes of Chris Botti and Sting, Allan Harris, who The New York Times describes as having a 'formidable baritone with... husky edges and deep resonant low notes', as well as Deva Mahal fresh off the success of her debut EP.

Also on the line-up is Anthony Strong, hailed as 'a new, genuine, male jazz singer' by BBC Radio 3, and MOBO winner Zara McFarlane, who takes to the stage before performing with Orphy Robinson later on in the Festival.

Singer-songwriter Charlie Wood joins the bill. His soulful singing incorporates elements of jazz, blues, traditional R&B and popular music, continuing the New Orleans music tradition with skill and style.

The show will be broadcast live on Radio 3. This show is part of the EFG Excellence Series.

It would be difficult to imagine a more impressive curtain-raiser to the EFG London Jazz Festival than Jazz Voice
