Inon Barnatan: Ravel & Mussorgsky

Part of International Piano Series

Described by The New York Times as ‘one of the most admired pianists of his generation’, Inon Barnatan recently completed his tenure as the New York Philharmonic’s inaugural Artist-in-Association.

He studied in London at the Royal Academy of Music, and is a recipient of a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant as well as Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award, which recognises young artists of exceptional accomplishment.

This recital marks his International Piano Series debut.

Ravel was deeply affected by the First World War and the first half of tonight’s programme is bookended by two very different responses to that period. Each movement of the delicate Tombeau de Couperin is dedicated to a friend the composer lost in the war, while the fiendishly virtuosic La Valse culminates in an expression of anger at an era changed forever.

Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is also a tribute to a late friend – the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann. This innovative and inventive suite is a musical depiction of artworks by Hartmann, who died at the age of 39.
