A Celebration Of Hugh Masekela's Life & Music

Part of EFG London Jazz Festival

A celebration of South African jazz visionary and defiant political voice Hugh Masekela, featuring Sibongile Khumalo, Oliver Mtukudzi and Tsepo Tshola.

Masekela’s full band, a top-class brass section and a stellar cast of guest vocalists all pay their respect to the great ‘Bra Hugh’.

Known as the ‘father of South African jazz’, the trumpeter and singer-songwriter stood against apartheid and was exiled from his country for 30 years.

Hits like ‘Grazing in the Grass’, ‘Stimela’ and ‘Bring Him Back Home’ brought Masekela’s distinctive brass tone and storytelling style to an international audience.

Sibongile Khumalo met Masekela upon his return from exile in 1990, and he encouraged her to develop her own unique vocal style. The Zimbabwean singer Oliver Mtukudzi and Masekela shared a deep love for their African roots, while Tsepo Tshola and his band Sankomota toured with Masekela in the 1980s.

Masekela died in January 2018, aged 78.
