Duet Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus

Part of Classical Season 2018/19

The Duet Philharmonic Orchestra performs Mahler’s Sixth Symphony (The Tragic), a work representing the full maturity of Mahler’s compositional abilities, full of drama, tenderness, and vast colourful orchestrations for a massive symphony orchestra.

The orchestra and the Duet Philharmonic Chorus also perform Stravinsky’s most religious work, The Symphony of Psalms, a work of extraordinary spiritualism connecting his relationship between Man and God.

Both works by Mahler and Stravinsky contain expansive and beautiful melodic lines, traditional harmonic language, and each composer’s personal stamp of form, structure and emotion.

The Duet Philharmonic Orchestra comprises the best-of-the-best music students from schools across the UK who perform every two years at Royal Festival Hall. The concert commences with a performance of Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, an exemplary tapestry of Wagner’s leitmotif technique revealing all of the themes from the vast opera distilled into simultaneous counterpoint.
